Meeting Other Equipment Requirements
You must also have the following safety equipment to operate an ATV, UTV, or limited-use OHM legally in Wisconsin.
Brakes
ATVs/UTVs and limited-use OHMs must be equipped with at least one brake. The brake may be operated either by hand or by foot.
Muffler and Spark Arrestor
Your ATV/UTV or limited-use OHM must be equipped with a functioning muffler to prevent unusual or excessive noise. Exhaust systems cannot be louder than 96 decibels when measured on the A scale.
Your ATV/UTV or limited-use OHM must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service–approved spark arrestor at all times, even during the winter.
Additional UTV Requirements
- The operator and all passengers must wear seat belts.
- All passengers must use only the seating designed for that purpose by the manufacturer.
- Aftermarket seats are not legal in Wisconsin.
- No passengers are allowed in the cargo area of the UTV.
Additional OHM Requirement
OHMs must have footpegs or footrests for the operator and any passenger(s).
