Helmet, Goggles, Spark Arrestor, and Lights
Before an OHV may be operated in New Mexico, the vehicle and its riders must have the required equipment.
- Helmet: All OHV operators and passengers under 18 years of age must wear a helmet that is properly fitted and securely fastened. The helmet must be designed for motorized vehicle use and have a safety-approved label from the Department of Transportation (DOT). Since a properly fitting, safety-approved helmet is the most important safety gear for an OHV rider or passenger, all riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets.
- Safety Goggles: All OHV operators and passengers under 18 years of age must wear securely fastened safety goggles or glasses, unless riding in an OHV with a front windshield. Safety goggles or glasses must:
- Meet VESC-8 or ANSI standards and…
- Be free of scratches and…
- Give a clear view to both sides.
- Spark Arrestor: An OHV with an internal combustion engine must have a U.S. Forest Service–approved spark arrestor that is in good working condition. Snowmobiles are exempt from this requirement.
- Lights: If operated between sunset and sunrise or when visibility is limited to 500 feet or less, the OHV must be equipped with:
- One or more headlights of sufficient candlepower to light objects at a distance of 150 feet and…
- At least one taillight of sufficient intensity to exhibit a red or amber light at a distance of 200 feet.
