Obeying OHM Operating Rules
When operating an OHM off a roadway, you may not operate:
- In a careless manner that endangers a person or property
- At a speed that is unreasonable or improper
- On private property unless you have permission from the property’s owner or lessee
- On any public property that is closed to OHMs or where OHM operation is prohibited by law
- On Indian lands unless you have permission from the tribal governing body or the Indian landowner
You must slow your OHM to 10 mph or less when you are riding within:
- 100 feet of a fishing shanty (ice shack).
- 150 feet of a dwelling or home.
- 100 feet of a person who is not operating a motor vehicle, ATV, UTV, OHM, or snowmobile if you are operating on the frozen surface of public waters or on an OHM trail. This includes, but is not limited to, slowing for anglers, hikers, bicyclists, joggers, horses, etc.
Local Ordinances
Counties, cities, towns, and villages may regulate OHM operation (including hours, trail temperature/condition restrictions, and times of the year) on OHM trails or routes by creating local laws. The ordinances must be on file with the DNR. Check locally for the specific laws.
