Muffler and Spark Arrestor Requirements

The muffler and exhaust system on ATVs and snowmobiles must meet applicable sound-level standards. It is illegal to modify the exhaust system on an ATV or a snowmobile to increase the noise level above the level of the original muffler.

The noise level must not exceed 96 decibels on the "A" scale when tested according to the provisions of SAE J-1287.

When operating in woodland areas, vehicles that emit exhaust within four feet of the ground also must be equipped with a spark arrestor.
