OHV Registration and Title

Any OHV being operated or transported on Idaho public lands, roads, or trails where allowed must display a valid registration sticker. This includes OHVs operating off-highway on a designated trail, open riding area, or motocross track. The only exceptions are:

  • Motorbikes with a displacement of 50 cubic centimeters or less
  • Vehicles used exclusively for agricultural or snow removal purposes
  • Vehicles that are properly registered in another state and operated by a resident of that state for no more than 30 days in Idaho

All OHVs that are operated on local jurisdictional roads open to OHV use must have both a valid registration sticker and a valid restricted vehicle license plate on the vehicle.

Restricted vehicle license plates and registration stickers are available from your County Assessor’s Motor Vehicle office.

  • The restricted vehicle license plate is valid for seven years.
  • The registration sticker expires on December 31 each year.

OHVs must have an Idaho title in the owner’s name before a license plate and registration sticker will be issued.

  • To title the OHV, you must take ownership documents, such as a signed title from the seller, manufacturer’s certificate of origin, prior registration, and bill of sale, to your County Assessor’s Motor Vehicle office. The only exceptions to titling are:
    • ATVs and motorbikes acquired before 1991
    • UTVs acquired before July 1, 2006
  • If your OHV is titled in Idaho, take your vehicle identification number (VIN) with you to register the vehicle.

If your OHV is currently registered, you may renew the sticker online or at any Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) registration vendor. When the license plate expires, you must go to your County Assessor’s Motor Vehicle office to renew.

Nonresident Registration Requirements

To operate an OHV legally in Idaho, nonresidents must have:

  • A valid OHV registration from their state of residency or…
  • A valid Idaho OHV registration sticker or…
  • A valid Idaho OHV registration sticker and a valid Idaho OHV restricted license plate to operate on local jurisdictional roads open to OHV use.
