General OHV Restrictions

All persons who are operating an OHV on federal, state, county, or city roads must have a valid driver’s license. There are exceptions for those under 16 years of age.

  • U.S. Forest Service Roads: If you are under 16 years of age and do not have a driver's license, you must:
    • Be supervised by a licensed adult operator over 18 years of age and…
    • Complete an IDPR–approved OHV safety course and carry your course completion certificate on the OHV.
  • All Other State and Federal Roads: If you are under 16 years of age and do not have a driver's license, you must be supervised by a licensed adult operator over 18 years of age.

The above requirements do not apply to persons who are operating an OHV off-highway on a designated trail, open riding area, or motocross track.
